Mill Creek's public safety costs increasing

The City of Mill Creek’s public safety costs are projected to increase substantially over the next two years according to the City of Mill Creek’s Finance Director, Landy Manuel.

Together, the 2013-2014 police, fire, and emergency medical services costs are projected to be at least $2.3 million over the amount spent in 2011-2012. These increases contribute significantly to the Mill Creek’s projected $1.7 million budget deficit for the 2013-2014 biennium.

Mill Creek attorney, Jack Follis, is running for the Snohomish County Superior Court position now held by retiring Judge Lary McKeeman. Follis, a 4.5 rated United States Tennis Association champion, held his campaign kickoff party at the Mill Creek Tennis Club on Wednesday, June 6th.

Mill Creek Tennis Club owner, Roger Mark, strongly endorses Follis, “Understand that this election is non-partisan and whether you are a Republican, Democrat or Independent Jack will bring fairness and leadership to this position.”

City of Mill Creek reduces health care costs with 2012 WellCity Award

The City of Mill Creek gets a 2% premium discount on their 2013 medical coverage as a result of winning a 2012 WellCity Award. Mill Creek earned a WellCity Award from the Association of Washington Cities (AWC) Employee Benefit Trust by demonstrating their commitment to employee health promotion and meeting the stringent standards set forth for the award.

The City of Mill Creek promoted employee health by creating policies, committees, and champions at the local level that focused on topics such as: work-life balance, healthy food, physical activity, personal care, and employee safety.

New Cable Ride, Zip Line at Cougar Park.

The City of Mill Creek has installed a cable ride at Cougar Park. The cable ride is designed specifically for older children and is a safe version of a zip line.

Rest assured that this expenditure did not come out of the City of Mill Creek's beleaguered General Fund. This equipment was included in the original Cougar Park Master Plan and was funded by mitigation fees collected from developers specifically for park improvements. By law, this money could not be used for anything else but Cougar Park improvements. The total cost of the installation was $41,000.

You may have been wondering about those little blue lights at the back of traffic lights at six major intersections in Mill Creek. Tom Gathmann, Mill Creek's acting City Manager and full-time Public Works Director, reported that the rumor they were cameras "went viral on Facebook" in the May 22nd Mill Creek City Council meeting. Rest assured they are not cameras spying on your every move.

First Annual Relay For Life of Mill Creek

the first annual Relay for Life of Mill Creek will be held on June 2, 2012

The first annual Relay for Life of Mill Creek will begin at McCollum Park at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 2nd. The relay starts with the opening ceremony and opening lap that honors cancer survivors and their caregivers.  After the first lap, all teams join in to keep the relay going until 9:00 AM Sunday morning. Pizza, hot dogs, burgers, and more will be available with all proceeds going to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Another Relay highlight is the Luminaria Ceremony that takes place at 10:00 p.m., honoring the community’s cancer survivors and remembering those lost to the disease. The track will be surrounded with glowing luminaria that bear the name of someone who has battled cancer. Luminaria may be purchased for $5.00 at the event, or by visiting the event website www.RelayForLife.org/millcreekwa .

What is the East Gateway Urban Village?

The East Gateway Urban Village is a planned shopping and residential center in the northeast corner of Mill Creek east of 35th Avenue SE, south of 132nd Street SE, and west of Seattle Hill Road. The vision is to have a Town Center-like development with a mix of professional office, retail shopping, and residential units on land that is now essentially undeveloped. When fully built out, the East Gateway Urban Village could include approximately 350,000 square feet of retail space, 60,000 square feet of office space, and a combination of 394 town homes and apartments.

County vigil honors girl slain in racial attack

Snohomish County vigil for Brisenia Flores

Snohomish County's Executive Office and Human Rights Commission invite the public to join them during a May 30 vigil honoring the death of Brisenia Flores.

Flores, of Latino descent, was tragically murdered three years ago at the hands of an anti-immigrant group organized in Snohomish County. Shawna Forde, an Everett resident, is currently on death row in Arizona for masterminding the events that led to Flores' death as well as the death of Flores' father.

"Because this militia-style group came out of our community, the Human Rights Commission wishes to stand together with Latino advocacy groups, faith-based organizations, community organizers, legislative representatives and Snohomish County residents against this type of hate-based activity," said Meg Winch, chair of the county's Human Rights Commission.
