The Snohomish County Boys Basketball Officials Association selected Cascade High School’s Darrell McNeal as Boy’s Basketball 2016 Coach of the Year.

“Congratulations to Darrell McNeal on being named the Snohomish County Boys Basketball Officials (SCBBO) boys basketball coach of the year,” said Everett Public Schools Director of Athletics Robert Polk.

"He was recognized with this award for the exemplary work he does with kids and his professional interaction with coaches and game officials. This is a well-deserved recognition.”

Each year the SCBBO presents the Norm Lowery Sr. Award to the boys basketball coach of the year.

Norm Lowery coached at Ferndale and Everett High School and is a member of the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. Everett High School’s gymnasium is also named after Coach Lowery.

Coaches are nominated by SCBBO officials during the season and voted on by SCBBO officials at the end of the season. The award is presented to the coach who demonstrates great sportsmanship, fair play and leadership of their team.

“This award has little to do with win/loss records,” noted Polk. “It’s all about building character, team play, fair play and sportsmanship. Darrell is truly a positive role model for students fortunate enough to be on the court and off the court with him.”

Falicia Green, Jackson Elementary School principal agreed, “Not only is Darrell an amazing P.E. teacher, he has a positive impact on some of our most high need students because of his willingness and skill at supporting students’ social and emotional needs. In addition, he helps some of our fourth-graders with their math. And, on top of that, he is a coach of our after-school soccer club. Darrell is an invaluable member of our school community.”

Cascade Assistant Principal Robert Aguilar also noted McNeal’s value add as a coach plus, Coach McNeal has a deep passion for the game of basketball, but more importantly for the students in our program. He is a tremendous asset for Cascade High School, and we are fortunate to call him our coach. This is a well-deserved recognition.”

On March 12th McNeal will be recognized at an SCBBO awards ceremony. The school board will also recognize him on March 22nd at their regular meeting.

“SCBBO is honored to recognize Mr. McNeal for this outstanding achievement. Congratulations to Mr. McNeal, your staff and Cascade High School!” said Ryan Taylor, SCBBP president.
