The new Mill Creek Senior Center will be opening in the Vintage at Mill Creek in May. An estimated $25,000 will be needed to buy new furnishings and additional funds are necessary for ongoing senior programs.

According to a City of Mill Creek report, the Mill Creek Senior Center has largely used second hand furnishings in the past but would like to purchase new furnishings that “complement the look and style of Vintage at Mill Creek.”

The report went on the say, “Northshore Senior Center CEO Brook Knight estimated the furnishings will cost about $10,000, and the equipment and supplies for upgrading some computing and telephone equipment and other needs will be about $15,000.”

As part of the new furnishings Mill Creek Senior Center Program Manager Terry Schuler wants to honor long-time volunteer Joan Buxton with a new desk.

Buxton has been volunteering 40 hours per week of her time to the Mill Creek Senior Center for the past nine years without receiving any compensation.

According to an email from Schuler, “Our Joan has been the welcoming face of the Mill Creek Senior Center for more than nine years of faithful volunteer service.”

“The litany of duties Joan performs is exhaustive, and how she accomplishes them in only forty hours a week, none of us can comprehend. Her sad little desk is registration central for classes, memberships, and membership renewal, answering questions and giving instructions. All the while, Joan maintains her patience, grace, and smile.”

Schuler imagines, “a beautiful front desk, with a very comfortable chair, plenty of nicely appointed shelving and, the pièce de résistance, a commemorative plaque with Joan’s name and volunteer extraordinaire designation.”

According to the City of Mill Creek report, the Vintage at Mill Creek developer will be hosting a grand opening and charity event for the Mill Creek Senior Center in May.
