Jackson High jazz bands participate in Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival

On February 23, 2013, the three Jackson High School jazz bands participated in the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho.
On Monday, March 25th, all three of the Jackson High School jazz bands will be performing at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley.

On February 23, 2013, the three Jackson High School jazz bands participated in the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho. Performances by all three jazz bands, Disfunkshun jazz combo, Take Seven jazz combo, and bass soloist, Erika Middleton-Sharpe, were evaluated by professional jazz artists and clinicians. Rubrics that address national music standards were used to provide feedback for the performances.

Each JHS group consistently scored in the outstanding category for the majority of the classifications of the rubrics. Several of JHS students were recognized as “Young Artist Solo Award” winners: Brandon Mar, drums, James Henderson, alto sax, Sean Hoon, tenor sax and Michael Henning, piano.

In addition, the Disfunkshun jazz combo, consisting of Michael Henning, Brandon Mar, King Dawidalle, and Shadi Mattar, was invited to perform in the Kibbie Dome at the evening “winners’ concert They performed a piece called Skyline which was written by Jackson High School senior and pianist Michael Henning. This combo will be performing at the Everett Public Schools Foundation Breakfast on March 21st.

Lesley Moffat is Director of Bands, Jazz, and Percussion at Jackson High School. Moffat conducts Jazz Band 1 and coaches the jazz combos. Kevin Hall is Music Program Assistant and conducts Jazz Band 2. Student-teacher Chelsey Caldwell conducts Jazz Band 3.

The Jackson High School Jazz Ensembles are recognized throughout the Pacific Northwest for outstanding performances in the community as well as at competitions and festivals in which they participate.

There are 60 dedicated students in three jazz bands at Jackson High School. They practice every morning from 6.30am – 7.30am before school starts. Many of these students are also involved in sports, regular volunteer work and honors and AP classes.
