"Mill Creek Garden Tour generates matching grant donation," by Lila Johnson

Looking to award monies raised by the successful 2018 Mill Creek Garden Tour, Mill Creek Garden Club Grant Chair Kathi Zehner contacted the Hope Creek Charitable Foundation Board to inquire if they had any needs for their Community Care Garden.

The combination of Mill Creek Garden Club, the Hope Creek Charitable Foundation, and Giving Tuesday came together to create a perfect match to solve a garden problem, and in the process plans blossomed!

Looking to award monies raised by the successful 2018 Mill Creek Garden Tour, Mill Creek Garden Club Grant Chair Kathi Zehner contacted the Hope Creek Charitable Foundation Board to inquire if they had any needs for their Community Care Garden. They must have replied, “Funny you should ask!”

During the growing season, Hope Creek Charitable Foundation volunteers must water by hand to keep the vegetable beds thriving; an automatic watering system was the answer.

The idea of a Matching Grant was born; for every $1.00 raised, Mill Creek Garden Club would award $3.00, up to a total of $1,000, and Hope Creek would announce their need on Giving Tuesday, an international day of charitable giving.

Amazingly, a total of $3,000 was raised for the Community Care Garden, which supplies fresh foods to the Mill Creek Community Food Bank, assisting families in the 98012 Zip Code.

Hope Creek Director Jennifer Boyington, along with Kevin Gasparich and April Guentz attended a recent Garden Club meeting to accept the $1,000 check from Garden Club.  Ms. Boyington commented the funds would be used for installing an automatic sprinkler system and power as planned.

With the money our grant helped raise, the fence will be moved out to create more space for planting beds; plus, a water feature and flowers will be added to attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Won’t the preschoolers have fun looking out their classroom windows!

Good things happen when Garden Club puts on a terrific Garden Tour with the purpose of giving all proceeds back to the community.
