China City update, April 11, 2014.
The new construction and remodel for Mill Creek’s newest Chinese restaurant is moving forward. According to China City owner, Jack Ng, “If things continue to go smoothly we will be open towards the end of May.”
China City will offer two covered outdoor dining areas to its patrons; a 235 square foot area along Main Street, and a 274 square foot area at the south side of the building.

Mill Creek residents and visitors will soon have a new place to eat Chinese food in the Mill Creek Town Center. China City will open their third Puget Sound area restaurant along Main Street in the space formerly occupied by Calico Corners by late Spring 2014.
At their November 21, 2013, meeting, Mill Creek’s Design Review Board approved an extensive remodel of the space. According to the Mill Creek Planning Department staff report, the remodel beginning in mid-December includes, “a new facade, an enclosed 480 square foot dining area expansion on the west side of the building, along with two covered outdoor dining areas.”
The dining area expansion on the west side of the building is called “garden room seating” with lots of windows, a fireplace, and “green wall” landscaping.
One of the two covered outdoor dining areas will be on Main Street and the other will be at the south side of the building facing the Hot Iron Mongolian Grill.
Although the two Asian restaurants will face each other, the cuisines and dining options are much different.
China City is a full-service restaurant with a full bar. Hot Iron Mongolian Grill provides a very casual, value-oriented meal and is described by one of its Yelp reviewers as, “A giant salad bar of meat, vegetables and sauces to choose from!” It’s hard to beat Hot Iron Mongolian Grill when money is tight and you have a big appetite.
According to China City’s website, their cuisine is a combination of northern Chinese food from Mandarin, Szechuan, and Hunan provinces. This translates to spicy food compared to the Cantonese-style food offered at many local Chinese restaurants.
A TripAdvisor reviewer reports that China City’s Freeland restaurant is comparable to PF Changs, “This is probably one of the most upscale American-Chinese restaurant that I've been into! Taste wise, it is similar to PF Chang's, but I feel the ingredients are fresher.”
According to a China City representative, the new restaurant is scheduled to open by late Spring 2014.
