From a May 1, 2019, Monroe VFW Post 7511 news release.
Held on Armed Forces Day, this year’s event includes a beer garden, free barbecue, vendors and more.
Monroe VFW Post 7511 invites community members to attend the 3rd annual Flags for our Fallen, a 5K walk/run and community celebration that takes place at 0930 (9:30 am) on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at Lake Tye Park in Monroe.
Held on Armed Forces Day, this year’s event promises more community engagement than ever before!
In addition to the traditional welcoming ceremony, speakers, National Anthem and bagpipes performance by Monroe Police Department Sgt. Brian Johnston, the event offers new attractions including free barbecue hamburgers and hot dogs and a beer garden.
Additionally, there are custom items available for raffle, drawings for prizes, a bouncy house and vendor booths.
While Flags for our Fallen 2019 takes the shape of a community celebration, the heart of the event remains deliberately unaltered: to honor and pay respect to veterans who serve and have served, especially recognizing those who selflessly paid for our freedom with their lives.
“We are planning for record-setting attendance,” said Post 7511 Commander Drew James.
He went on to say, “This year is all about celebrating our community while honoring our veterans. We’ve got amazing raffle items, free hamburgers and hot dogs and our first-ever beer garden. Come join us for a day of community!”
Flags for our Fallen was founded in 2017 as a way of honoring veterans while heightening awareness of Post 7511. Since then, the post has nearly quadrupled in size, vastly enhancing its ability to serve veterans and the community. In addition to having reestablished itself as a vibrant and active presence in Monroe, the post has rekindled its Auxiliary, which officially began its service in January of this year.
Flags for our Fallen has been an integral part of the post’s growth.
“We are grateful to the community for its tremendous support over the past two years,” James added. “Because of that support, we are better able to accomplish our mission of serving veterans.”
Monroe VFW Post 7511 thanks community partners Harry’s on Tye, Dreadnought, the Sultan Liquor Store and Northwest Liquor and Wine for generously supporting the beer garden. All proceeds from the beer garden directly support Post 7511.
