At their November 27, 2018, meeting, the Mill Creek City Council unanimously approved a FieldTurf USA, Inc. construction contract, to execute the Mill Creek Sports Park’s turf and light replacement project.
Project work is expected to commence in December. The park will close to the public as of January 1st and is expected to reopen in April 2019.
Mill Creek Sports Park has been the City of Mill Creek’s most popular recreational facility since it opened in 2004. The park serves approximately 3,800 youth annually. The field is rented an average of 2,661 hours over the course of 330 days by local youth sports organizations. It serves as the only all-weather synthetic turf baseball and soccer field in the city.
“The industry standard for an all-weather turf field lifespan is eight years,” said Mayor Pro Tem Brian Holtzclaw.
He went on to say, “We have taken great care of the field to get 14 years of use. But now is the time to ensure this incredible park serves the Mill Creek community for many more years.”
The project will replace the original 64,000 square foot field turf, which is well beyond its useful life, and will retrofit and upgrade the existing park lighting system, including the field, skate park and parking lot lights.
The new light emitting diode (LED) lighting system includes a new control system and will substantially reduce the city’s electric bill.
The City also will add a 60-inch American Disability Act (ADA) compliant gate to serve as a primary entrance from the main parking lot.
Field fencing and netting will be replaced, and kick boards will be added at the field and skate park.
Finally, the project includes improvements to the public address system.
The project contract with FieldTurf USA is for $907,762.90.
