From a Washington State Patrol news release.
The Washington State Patrol has noticed an upward trend of Hit and Run Collisions throughout the state. Even though we don’t have all the reasons people run away, we do have a way you can help; get as much information from the vehicle as you can, specifically the license plate.
You hope it never happens to you, but there’s always the unfortunate chance that you’ll be involved in a collision. A million thoughts are running through your head and to make matters worse the driver of the other vehicle has now fled the scene of the collision. You end up asking yourself, “What do I do now?”
We know your safety and the safety of your passengers is your biggest concern, it is ours as well. But, if you’re safe and in a position to get the license plate of the running vehicle, that will be the most valuable piece of the puzzle that you can provide us.
There are several ways to obtain the license plate:
- Take a cell phone picture,
- Write it down, or
- Call the 9-1-1 dispatcher and tell them.
Having a dash cam mounted in your vehicle also helps capture the needed information.
Other information to collect includes:
- The running vehicle’s make, model, and color,
- A description of any damage to the running vehicle, and
- The direction the running vehicle was heading.
The majority of the time that a Washington State Patrol trooper is provided the license plate of the running vehicle, we are able to later track down the suspect and file charges for Hit and Run.
