From an Everett Public Schools news release.
If you live in the south end of the school district, you may have noticed a lot of action happening in the area east of Sunset Road on 180th Street SE, the site of the new elementary school. Since the June groundbreaking, there has been nonstop construction.
So far, 8’ diameter corrugated metal pipes were installed under the parking lot for the underground storm water detention system. The two-story structure is taking shape with metal framing and concrete floors.
These beginning stages lay the groundwork for what will transform into 30 classrooms, an office, library, gymnasium, a cafeteria, kitchen, covered play area and playfields.
The site also has a protected wetlands area, which will be used for outdoor learning.
Built with funds from the 2016 capital bond, the school is scheduled to open in time for the start of school in fall 2019.
Ms. Celia O’Connor-Weaver, currently the principal at Hawthorne Elementary School, will be the principal of the new elementary school. Approximately 60 faculty and staff will join her to support student learning. The hiring of that staff will begin in early 2019.
A committee of staff and community members have begun the process of recommending a school name for the board to consider. The committee is gathering school name suggestions through an online survey until October 28, 2018.
Students attending the schools near the new elementary school location, Cedar Wood, Forest View, and Woodside, will help the committee narrow the name selections the committee will propose to the school board in early December.
