Motorists should prepare for traffic disruptions when all westbound lanes of US 2 are fully closed between Snohomish and Everett for the entire weekend beginning Friday night, August 2, 2019, at 7:00 pm.
Westbound US 2 is scheduled to reopen on Monday morning, August 5th, at about 4:00 am.
Southbound traffic will be detoured through Snohomish and Mill Creek to I-5, while northbound traffic will be detoured on State Route 9 through Lake Stevens and Marysville to I-5.
Major backups and delays are forecasted on the detour routes.
A Washington State contractor will repave three miles of westbound US 2 from Bickford Avenue (SR 9) to the I-5 interchange including the Hewitt Avenue trestle.
The eastbound lanes of US 2 have already been resurfaced and won’t be closed.
The following on-ramps will also be closed:
- On-ramp from westbound SR 204 to westbound US 2.
- On-ramp from westbound 20th Street Southeast (SR 204 vicinity) to westbound US 2.
- On-ramp from westbound 20th Street Southeast (50th Avenue vicinity) to westbound US 2.
- On-ramp from SR 9 to westbound US 2.
- On-ramp from Bickford Avenue to westbound US 2.
This weekend closure was originally scheduled for June. It was postponed due to forecasted rain. This make-up closure is also weather-dependent.
If weather postpones the August 2nd to August 5th closure, they will try to use the next weekend.
According to the Washington Department of Transportation website, “While many of our projects can continue in the rain, this is not one of them. The waterproof material we need to put down to prevent rainwater from seeping into the concrete bridge deck and corroding the rebar has to be applied when there is NO rain or moisture AT ALL on the bridge deck.”
