It’s been a more than a few years since most Garden Club members have purchased “back to school” supplies, but when asked by our Board to support Hope Creek Charitable Foundation’s School Supply Drive, shop they did.
It brought back memories of school days long ago: picking out a new lunch box, purchasing Pee Chee folders, #2 pencils, a Pink Pearl eraser, a Sheaffer ink pen and even finding an old cigar box to keep those pencils from rolling around in your school desk. Wow, I’m giving away my age here!
Let’s move on with just the facts: working from the HCCF list, our women purchased pens, crayons, markers, colored pencils, highlighters, and scissors. The supplies were loaded into Kathy Thomas’ truck parked in Nancy Hedge’s driveway. Everyone who donated was greeted by our enthusiastic volunteer crew and handed a small bag of saltwater taffy. We were told one treat bag contained a special surprise sticker insider.
We filled the truck with the school supplies and donated $300 to help local kids heading back to school in September. It pays to advertise; when “Dan the Pool Guy” saw our MCGC sign in Nancy’s driveway, he stopped by to contribute. Nice!
As to the saltwater taffy, member Lynne Menzies was the lucky lady who found a ladybug sticker in her treat bag. Lynne was gifted with a bag of 50 tulip bulbs. After planting them in the dirt this fall, Lynne will have a colorful spring to remember her kindness!
A round of applause to all our members who answered the bell and had the opportunity to revisit some “back to school” memories. Mill Creek Garden Club, home to wonderful people with caring hearts and maybe some dirt under their fingernails!
