Mill Creek’s annual Run of the Mill 5K road race was held under sunny skies and warm temperatures on Saturday, July 12, 2014. Almost 1,100 registered racers finished the event and there was a large crowd of spectators on hand to watch.

As in past years, there were actually two races in one. In addition to the very competitive Run of the Mill 5K, the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association ran their 2014 East/West Senior All-Star Race on the same course.

Jordan McNamara, who placed 7th in the 1500 meters at the 2012 Olympic trials, broke his own Run of the Mill 5K course record with a time of 14 minutes, 11 seconds.

Although this certified 5K race attracts world-class athletes, there were runners of all ages and abilities racing against the clock. Quite a few mothers pushing strollers and parents accompanying their children participated. A number of well-behaved dogs led their masters through the course as well.

Eighty-year-old Bill Iffrig of Lake Stevens, who was famously photographed at the Boston Marathon in 2012, finished the 2014 Run of the Mill 5K in 24:47.2 minutes.

The Run of the Mill 5K has been an annual event in Mill Creek for twenty-nine years. This is the longest continuously active event in Mill Creek.

The race organizers and volunteers ensure 100% of the entry fees go to charity. According to the Run of the Mill 5k website, “The Run of the Mill raises money for cancer patients who are undergoing treatment as well as other local charities.  A secondary focus is providing financial support to youth sports, especially high school running programs.”
