The 2012 East/West Senior All-Star Race was the race within the race at the July 7th Run of the Mill 5K. Organized by the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association (WSCCCA), the East/West Senior All-Star Race is an invitational race comprised of graduating high school seniors who competed at the state level and meet the 5K-time standard of 17:45 to 22:00.

The East/West Senior All-Star Race has a decades long tradition. It began as a half-time activity at the East/West All-Star Football Game and evolved into a separate event highlighting graduating high school seniors said Jackson High School Track and Cross Country Coach, Eric Hruschka.

According to Run of the Mill 5K organizer, Linda Knox, the 2012 East/West Senior All-Start Race was run on the same course as the Run of the Mill 5K, but started a few minutes earlier to give the high school seniors a good share of the limelight and to ensure they wouldn’t get in the way of the faster world-class athletes at the head of the Run of the Mill 5K pack.

Jordan McNamara, who placed 7th in the 1500 meters at the recent Olympic trials, broke his own Run of the Mill 5k course record with a time of 14 minutes, 13 seconds. A number of the East/West All-Star runners finished before McNamara because they were given the head start.

Knox said that the East/West Senior All-Star Race has a long association with the Run of the Mill 5K, “We would always give the WSCCCA all of our left over water for their race.” As well, a portion of the funds raised by the Run of the Mill 5K goes to scholarships disseminated by the WSCCCA after their East/West Senior All-Star Race.

Hruschka said that the East/West Senior All-Star Race was held at a track on Lake Washington the last two years, but a scheduling conflict prevented them from returning this year.

One of the Run of the Mill 5K organizers, Steve Knox, helped Hruschka integrate the two races when the other track wasn’t available. Since Hruschka also serves as Clerk of the Course for the Run of the Mill 5K, he was able to orchestrate both races to ensure everything worked smoothly.

A number of scholarships totaling $2,500 were awarded at the race to athletes who excelled in academics, school and community service, and displayed sportsmanship and integrity in cross country. Evan Patrick (Inglemoor) received the Jeff Munroe Memorial Scholarship for $1,000, Noah Heidenreich (Nathan Hale) received the Jon Fulton Memorial Scholarship for $500, Isabel Ferguson (Bainbridge) received $500, and Allie Nichols (Redmond) received $500.
