From an August 13, 2020, Snohomish County press release.

The Snohomish County Arts Commission is seeking proposals for artwork for a “Hope Symbol” for the plaza in newly renovated Esperance Park in Edmonds. The competition is open to professional artists residing in Snohomish County and proposals are due by 4:00 pm on September 10th.

“Esperance” means “hope” in French. Snohomish County Parks and the Arts Commission propose to commission a site-specific sculptural element for the central area of the park that reflects “hope” in order to inspire park and community users, and as a nod to the park’s name.

The round public plaza has a 20 feet in diameter 8-pointed star designed into the concrete to symbolize hope. The statue will be incorporated into the plaza and placed on the star design.

Snohomish County sets aside 1% of the budget for each capital project for the county's art fund. Since the total construction budget for Esperance Park is between $1.3 and $1.4 million, $14,000 has been set aside to pay for the "Hope Symbol" sculpture.

The contract amount will be inclusive of all costs associated with the artwork. Payment will be made on successful completion of the artwork.

If there is additional budget remaining after purchase of art for the central area of the park, Parks proposes that a small sculpture be commissioned to be installed within the natural area in the northwest corner of the park. A forest playground is also currently being planned for that area of the park and shall incorporate native plantings, rocks, logs and other natural features for interest and exploratory play. “Hiding” a sculpture would provide a fun opportunity for discovery and add to the experience of the playground.
