Mitchell will finish out term vacated in January

On February 3, 2014, the Everett Public Schools Board of Directors interviewed five candidates for appointment to board Position 4 which was vacated in January:

  • Traci Mitchell
  • Kristine Petereit
  • Daniel Mills
  • Michelle Black
  • Arletha Northrop

Interviews began at 3 pm and concluded at 7:17 pm when the board went in to Executive Session to review the candidates’ qualifications.

Returning to Open Session at approximately 9:07 pm, the board voted 3-1 to appoint Traci Mitchell to Position 4.  Mitchell will serve as a member of the Board of Directors until that term ends in 2015. At that time, she may choose whether to run for election to serve another term.

Caroline Mason, appointed by the board to fill Position 3 in a similar process in January spoke to all five candidates following the board decision, “This is my first opportunity to go through this process from this perspective, and I can speak to how difficult a choice this was – a choice made all the more difficult by the breadth of experiences you each bring to the table and the depth of community involvement you have – also the different approach you each had to the questions we asked.”

Echoing that theme, Carol Andrews, board vice president, thanked the candidates for broadening the perspectives of the board, “You expanded our perception of the work we do with your thoughtful responses to our questions and the quality of application materials.”

Board member Ted Wenta invited each candidate to stay involved in the district, “This is certainly not the only avenue for making a difference. You each would be a complement to the district mission in any role you choose.”

Mitchell will be administered the oath of office at the next board meeting on February 11th. The meeting begins at 4:30 pm in the Community Resource Center Board Room at 3900 Broadway in Everett.
