Members and guests of the Mill Creek Women's Club enjoyed a fun “Antiques Roadshow” experience at the February 20th, 2013 luncheon. Edmonds antiques appraiser Mike Odell was the guest speaker, and members were invited to bring along their family heirlooms and collectibles for appraisal.

Odell entertained members and guests of the Mill Creek Women's Club with his many stories of growing up and working in London and his fascinating career in the antiques business. Odell told the group that during his career he has sold everything from a Russian Spacecraft to the facade of a building. He even bought $500 worth of seats from the old Kingdome for $5 each and sold them on Ebay for $350 each.

Local woman creates art magazine for kids

Bothell resident, Eva Soukalova created a magazine for kids called arTree. She feels strongly that there is a need for kids to be exposed to more art.

Bothell resident, Eva Soukalova, is an art director with a background in child education and psychology. She feels strongly that there is a need for kids to be exposed to more art. This was her inspiration to create a magazine for kids called arTree.

Soukalova said, “The public school programs are being cut, art classes are expensive and parents do not have enough time to look for high-quality art projects online. I love art and ever since my kids were born, I was trying to teach them how to appreciate it and, of course, how to create it. I created hundreds of projects and lesson plans and decided that a magazine is the best way to share it with everybody. After all, which kid does not like to get their own mail?”

Are you gluten intolerant?

Kate Towell provides insight into the symptoms of gluten intolerance.

I recently returned home from a trip to Costa Rica where I was helping out with a yoga teachers’ training. It was a great trip and I had the pleasure of meeting a fantastic group of women and was able to teach some Ayurveda, which I loved. One unexpected discovery of the trip, well post-trip, was that I am gluten intolerant! Let me back up a bit.

While in Costa Rica, I was treated to some amazing food. The cook at the Goddess Gardenwas fantastic. For two weeks I ate a mostly raw, nearly vegan diet. We had some cheese and the occasional egg but the rest was a feast of fresh fruits and veggies. It was basically an elimination diet and I didn't realize it until I returned home to my usually diet, which is pretty good I might add. I don't eat junk, processed foods and eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies.
